2015 Innocent Bystander Syrah

Vineyard:

This wine is principally from the Sexton and Tarraford vineyards. With a smaller contribution from Lone Star Creek vineyard on the upper Yarra basalt soils.

Season:

Lovely winter rains and an ideal spring made for a good, even fruit set and big healthy canopies. Summer growing conditions were ideal, with an average January temperature of 27.5°C. We had welcome rain mid-February that gave us a little breathing space; all our Syrah was hand picked and in near perfect condition at the winery.

Vinification:

100% hand picked fruit. This wine is principally from the Sexton and Tarraford Vineyards. With a contribution from Lone Star Creek Vineyard on the Upper Yarra basalt soils. Whole bunches were used on batches at varying percentages based on fruit structure and source. The overall blend incorporates 40% whole bunches to bring out perfumes.

Oak:

100% matured in French oak, barriques and puncheons. The separate batches of wine completed natural malolactic fermentation. Time in oak: 12 months (French oak).

Serial winner, vintage by vintage, of show awards, this winning gold at the Yarra Valley Wine Show in '16, matured in french oak. It has very good hue and depth, it gets you attention from the first whiff, the first sip. The black fruits have special texture and structure, demanding you take the next mouthful before finishing the first, the tannins also add to both flavour (spicy) and texture (fine, persistent).
