OUR WINES

making seriously delicious wine we love to drink & share

Our wines are approachable characters. Smooth? Yes. Uncouth? Never.

Innocent Bystander is born from an audacious spirit — the love child of a brewer-turned-winemaker with a natural curiosity and disregard for convention. Nestled in the Yarra Valley, we've got a simple mantra: make wines we love to drink and share, without the fuss and pretense. After all, seriousness is for suits and you don't see much of that where we come from. Instead, our winemakers show the duality of Innocent Bystander: one alchemist and one tinkering craftsman, each guilty in the crime of passion. Passion for creating bright, young, approachable wines that are best paired with people — from our flagship Pinot Noir to lip-smacking Moscato.

LIKE A RIOT OF BRIGHT RED BERRIES

2023 Pinot Noir

A hero variety for the Yarra Valley and our pride and joy. A Pinot that carefully balances cerebral intrigue and pure drinking pleasure. It’s like a riot of berries laid over a bed of fine silky tannin. Jump in, you’ll love it.

Smells like: Blueberry, boysenberry, cherry, and earthy dried spices
Tastes like: Plush red cherry with hints of cola, spice, and soft, silky tannins
Goes with: Mushroom pizza, pasta with duck ragu. Your best wine glass and the crackle of vinyl.

A FRESH FINISH THAT GOES FOR DAYS

2022 Moscato

Moscato has it, and it’s not afraid to flaunt it. Sweet juicy berries, generous bubbles, and a fresh finish that goes for days. It’s not easy to make a wine that looks and tastes this good, but this Moscato makes it look easy, and you can too.

Smells like: Fairy floss, blackcurrant, Turkish delight, and mandarin peel
Tastes like: Wild strawberry, violets & honeycomb with well-balanced sweetness
Goes with: Fresh summer berries and double cream, crêpes with lemon syrup and orange zest

LIKE A SPARKLING COMET ACROSS MY TASTEBUDS

NV Prosecco

Prosecco: incoming. Whether to start the evening or end the day, there’s nothing like a glass of tantalizing and vivacious sparkling to set the mood. With notes of delicate pear and citrus over soft bubbles and a fine, refreshing finish, there's no excuses necessary.

Smells like: Citrus, melon, lemon, almonds and honey
Tastes like: White peach, guava and lemon zest with a clean crisp finish
Goes with: Fresh seafood, ancient grain salad with beetroot and feta, or pasta Primavera

Mea Culpa is an admission of guilt, an unapologetic acknowledgment that we should have known better.

While we generally steer well clear of the navel-gazing snobbery of the wine world, with Mea Culpa we give over to passion. This is not a wine that claims perfection, but a wine that delivers an expression of site, vintage, and winemaking character. If indulging in your passion is a crime, then we are guilty as charged.

A FINE BALANCE BETWEEN ELEGANCE & INTENSITY

2022 Mea Culpa Pinot Noir

A beautifully layered, complex, and fragrant expression of Pinot Noir from historic vineyards in the Yarra Valley. With wafts of blood-red roses, wild blackberry, and blueberries, accompanied by hints of cardamom, cinnamon, and cranberry, its mesmerizing garnet and ruby hues capture attention.

GOLD MEDAL, 2022 INTERNATIONAL COOL-CLIMATE WINE SHOW

2020 Mea Culpa Syrah

Remember picking berries as a kid, juice running down your chin, hands stained red? Now put it in a glass and gorge yourself on the intense flavours of ripe blackberry and raspberry, supported by a wicked sensation of white pepper spice. An exceptionally smooth and layered single vineyard Syrah from an outstanding Yarra Valley vintage.

Enter the usual suspects: a ragtag crew of hero reds and cool-climate whites.

LIKE A REBAL (WITH) A CAUSE

2021 Syrah

Yes, Syrah is Shiraz. But it's more Clooney than Diesel, more Portman than Robbie. Generous in fruit, restrained in oak and subtly perfumed, the cool hillsides of the Yarra Valley are perfect for making this intriguing style. Tantalizingly spicy and made to be savoured.

Smells like: White pepper, red currant and raspberry

2023 Pinot Gris

This Pinot Gris is a genuine people-pleaser. A zippy, citrus-driven French style that’s fresh, textural, harmonious and lingers just long enough. Not too heavy, not too light, it’s the Goldilocks of the whites.

Tastes like: Lime flowers and miso. Crisp, bone dry and moreish with a lemon sorbet finish
Goes with: Beer battered whiting, fresh oysters, chargrilled vegies. Lofty goals and little pleasures

LIKE THE JAMES BOND OF RED GRAPES

2022 Nero d'Avola

Nero is the new black. This stylish and salacious red is the James Bond of grapes. Smooth, dry, and perfectly poised to bring a hint of adventure and a dash of mystery to the table. Originally grown in the dry earth of Sicily, Nero is exceptionally well suited to the sun-drenched soils of northern Victoria.

Smells like: Vibrant red currants and loganberry with hints of clove and cumin
Tastes like: A richness of red berry fruits, sublte pepper spice notes with fine tannins
Goes with: Calabrese pizza, seared tuna with Sicilian olives, roasted stuffed mushrooms

LIKE A SWEET SPANISH SEDUCTION

2021 Tempranillo

Smells like: Dark cherry, red berries and some earthy spice
Tastes like: Bright, juicy berries and cola jubes followed by dusty, savoury spice
